Turin, capital of Piemonte

Turin is the beautiful capital of Piemonte in northwestern Italy, a bustling city all year around and a perfect alternative stop to Milano.

As most places, Turin is very pleasant to visit also at low season. When Christmas decorations are being taken down, the snow is beginning to covers the hilltops around the city, and the squirrels in the royal gardens are curious of what you can offer them.

Turin was the first capital of the united kingdom of Italy in 1861, after many centuries as the seat of first the Savoard Empire and later the Kingdom of Sardinia. Which definitely left its signs by a huge amount of impressing barock buildings all around.

If you continue in the direction of the train from the main station, Porta Nuova, you will reach the Royal Palaces. Along the way, you’ll follow the arcades passing grand squares and shopping streets, plus the world’s largest covered market, Mercato di Porta Palazzo.

From several blocks away, you will soon see the landmark of Turin, as well as the world’s tallest brick building, Mole Antonelliana, 167.5 meters high and originally built as a synagogue. Today it houses a film museum, a treasury for every movie junkie.

For the best pasta, don’t miss Pastificio Defilippis, handmade agnolotti, plin and all other kinds of delicious pasta since 1874.

In summer, move down to the river and Murazzi del Po, ”the old masonry”, where everyone lives their lives at its most fun.

At warmer seasons as well as in winter time, you’ll find a lot of nice little restaurants and bars around the station Porta Nuova. For example Babudi wine bar, Osteria degli Ottoni, Casa del Barolo Enotavola Ristorante, Guarini and Libery, for craft beer and natural wines.

We stayed several times at Hotel Gran Mogul, just around the corner from the train station.

And as always, look for where the staff of the train station have their coffee, that’s always the best place!
